A macaron is a meringue base made from a mixture of egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, fine ground almond, and other ingredients depding on the flavor. The macaron is commonly filled with buttercream or jam filling sandwiched between two cookies. Its name is derived from an Italian word "maccarone" or "maccherone, derived from ammaccare which means crush or beat, used here in reference to the almond which is the key ingredient for macaroons.
